UGANDA: Great Apes of Uganda Safari

  • Day 1

    Entebbe

    You arrive and are received at Entebbe International Airport and then transferred for an overnight stay.

  • Day 2

    Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

    You'll board the boat to Ngamba Island for a day trip.

  • Day 3

    Ziwa Reserve – Budongo Forest

    You head for Budongo Forest eco-tourist site with a stop over at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary.

  • Day 4

    Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest – Hoima/Bugoma

    You'll explore Budongo Forest and go chimpanzee trekking. Go on a cultural activity in the afternoon with Boomu Women Group.

  • Day 5

    Bugoma Forest – Kibale National Park

    Today sees us go on a trek in the Bugoma Forest and then head for Kibale National Park.

  • Day 6

    Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest – Queen Elizabeth National Park

    You'll go an a nature walk in Kibale National Park and then connect to Queen Elizabeth National Park.

  • Day 7

    Kyambura Gorge – Queen Elizabeth National Park

    You will go on a nature walk within Kyambura Gorge in the morning, then take a boat trip along the Kazinga channel in the afternoon.

  • Day 8

    Ishasha – Bwindi Impenetrable National Forest

    You go on a game drive within the Ishasha sector of the park then, in the afternoon, proceed to Bwindi National Park.

  • Day 9

    Mountain Gorilla Safari

    Today sees you go on a gorilla trek within the depth of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

  • Day 10

    Bwindi – Entebbe

    Today is reserved for transfers to Entebbe for your flight.

Day 1

Entebbe

Your arrival at Entebbe International Airport is greeted by our on-site representative and transferred for an overnight stay at your preferred lodging option.

Day 2

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

After breakfast, you'll board the boat to Ngamba Island for a day trip.

Ngamba Island is located 23 Km offshore from Entebbe. In 1998 it became Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary under the Jane Goodall Foundation with the objective of providing safe haven to orphaned chimpanzees that had been rescued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority from poachers or traders, and with no chance of
survival if let back into the wild.

The day trip allows you to see the island and to view the feeding habits of the chimps. However, if you wish to take the care giver chimpanzee experience or the integration experience, you will need to spend the night in the eco-lodge. This is offered with an optional supplement.

In the afternoon, we head to Kampala, for dinner and overnight at your preferred lodging.

Day 3

Ziwa Reserve – Budongo Forest

After breakfast, your adventure proceeds by driving northwest towards Masindi and the Murchison Falls National Park. You stop over for a nature walk at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary – the breeding project which saw the rebirth of the endangered white and black rhinos that were last seen in Uganda in 1981.

After lunch, your journey continues to Budongo Forest in Kaniyo-Pabidi, the eco-tourist site where it is possible to organize chimpanzee trekking activities.

You have your dinner and overnight stay at Budongo Eco-Lodge.

Day 4

Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest – Hoima/Bugoma

After breakfast, you'll enter the forest for the chimpanzee trekking. Budongo is the largest tropical forest in Uganda at 790 sq Km in size and hosting a population of about 600 chimpanzees as well as other primates, such as the black and white colobus monkey, the red-tailed monkey, the blue monkey, the vervet monkey and
baboons.

After lunch, the afternoon has you take an optional cultural activity at Boomu Women Group near Budongo.

You have dinner and overnight in Hoima at your preferred lodging.

Day 5

Bugoma Forest – Kibale National Park

After breakfast, we drive to Bugoma Forest, south of Hoima. This natural tropical forest is 420 sq Km in size and is rated among the most important in Uganda due to its biodiversity. It hosts a population of chimpanzees as well as other primates, including the endemic Ugandan mangabey. We organize a trekking in the forest
to see the Ugandan mangabey.

In the afternoon, after lunch, we proceed to the region of Fort Portal and Kibale National Park, which lies in the shadow of the Rwenzori Mountains, the largest mountain ranges in Africa.

You have dinner and overnight at your preferred lodging.

Day 6

Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest – Queen Elizabeth National Park

After breakfast, you go on a nature walk in Kibale National Park to experience the tropical rainforest, birding and especially, encounter the chimpanzees in their natural environment. Kibale national park with its 766 sq Km of tropical rainforest contains the highest primate density in the world. Among the species which you may see include the black and white colobus, the red-tailed monkey, and the vervet monkey. Moreover, up to 325 species of birds have also been recorded here!

In the afternoon, we proceed to Queen Elizabeth National Park, which lies enveloped between Lake George to the East, Lake Edward to the West and the Rwenzori Mountains to the North. You go on a game drive as you make your entrance into the park.

You'll spend your overnight and have dinner at your preferred lodging.

Day 7

Kyambura Gorge – Queen Elizabeth National Park

After breakfast we drive to Kyambura Gorge – a deep forested gorge along river Kyambura within Queen Elizabeth National Park. The location is worth a visit and if you're fit to descend the gorge for a nature walk, you might encounter the chimpanzees. Kyambura has a population of about 50 chimpanzees.

After lunch in the afternoon, you'll take the most exciting safari by boat from Mweya peninsula along the Kazinga channel – one of the most popular sites in Uganda for its concentration of wildlife, bird life and opportunities for good photographs. Moreover, you'll get to see plenty of hippos, buffaloes and elephants that congregate
to take a drink from the channel.

In the evening, we'll proceed to the Ishasha sector of the park where you'll have dinner and overnight stay at Ishasha Jungle Lodge.

Day 8

Ishasha – Bwindi Impenetrable National Forest

You'll go on another game drive in the north of the park then leave In the morning, we organize a game drive along the tracks of the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The best attraction here, with a spot of luck, is to see the tree climbing lions. You'll also get to enjoy one of the most beautiful spots of
savannah.

After lunch, we proceed to Bwindi National Park – the tropical rainforest that's a natural habitat to the endangered mountain gorillas. We take an ascent of up to 2,300 meters above sea level. The choice of area for the "gorilla safari" is determined by the availability and allocation of the permits for the activity.

Day 9

Mountain Gorilla Safari

Early in the morning, you enter the tropical rainforest of Bwindi for the gorilla safari. This activity starts at 8am and will see you follow the ranger guides in a group of up to 8 people max as you search for the habituated families of mountain gorillas. Bwindi forest in Uganda has a population of about 420 gorillas, which
accounts for half the world's population according to 2012 gorilla surveys.

The amount of time you spend before encountering the gorillas is unpredictable and varies. However, upon chancing upon them, you get an hour to observe them and their behavior, while also photographing them.

Do ensure to take a packed lunch and water with you in a bag. You might engage the support of available porters to help you get you bag luggage.

Day 10

Bwindi – Entebbe

After breakfast, we drive back to Kampala and have lunch en route.

In the evening, you'll be transferred to Entebbe International Airport for your flight. Optionally with a supplement, you could spend the night in Entebbe.
