Kigali

You’ll be welcomed upon arrival at Kigali International Airport and transferred to your hotel for an overnight stay at Flame Tree Village Hotel. Time permitting, we shall arrange sightseeing in Kigali.

Day 2

Kigali – Akagera National Park

After breakfast, we set off for Akagera National Park which lies to the east of Rwanda. Here, the countryside gives way to savannah with clusters of acacia mingled with open grassland. The is approximately a two and a half hour drive.

Lunch and birding along the lakeside will be arranged for the afternoon.

You have dinner and an overnight stay at one of Akagera Lodge or Ruzizi Tented Lodge.

Day 3

Akagera National Park

Today, the entire day is set aside for birding in the park as well as along Lake Ihema. The park records up to 550 bird species which include unique species such as the shoebill (Balaeniceps rex) as well as the papyrus gonolek (Laniarius mufumbiri). Among the endemic species, there are the ibis (Threskiornithinae), jacanas,
herons, plovers (Charadriidae), sandpipers, malachite kingfisher (Alcedo cristata), hawks to mention a few.

After lunch, the afternoon sees you take a canoe ride on Lake Ihema and get to see the large number of hippos, the huge Nile crocodiles and birds.

Dinner and overnight at either Akagera Lodge, or Ruzizi Tented Lodge.

Day 4

Akagera – Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast we will set off for Volcanoes National Park. This journey winds through the beautiful, terraced hillsides that characterize much of Rwanda's landscape, gradually climbing to the base of the awesome volcanoes Virunga. Sometimes, as many as five peaks are visible!

The gorillas' habitat, in the mountainous north, is a string of magnificent Virunga peaks that range from 2500 to 4500 meters above sea level: Karismbi, Bisoke Mikeno, Sabinyo, Gahinga and Muhubura volcanoes. This stunning backdrop is host to over half the world's wild mountain gorillas.

The exhilarating climb to the gorilla's natural habitat of shady bamboo forest offers fantastic views in all directions and explores the rich ecosystems of blending evergreen and bamboo forests, open grass lands, swamps and health.

A late lunch will be had upon arrival at Volcanoes National Park. Dinner and an overnight stay at any of the select lodging options on offer.

Day 5

Volcanoes National Park

We suggest the optional activity of mountain gorilla tracking for the morning. It is quite a site getting to spend an hour watching the gorillas as they go about their business, feeding, playing and resting as you question your primeval existence and re-live the wonder that kept Dian Fossey living in the forest for
almost 18 years.

Later, we'll return to the base in time for a late lunch. Please note however, that some gorilla families are more elusive, and tracking them can take a full day! Especially so when it is wet and muddy.

Alternatively, you may take another trekking option in the park such as the golden monkey trekking, or Old Karisoke. Check in for dinner and an overnight stay at one of the select lodges.

Day 6

Volcanoes National Park – Lake Kivu

After breakfast we go bird watching in the Volcanoes National Park. Here, you are likely to see bird species such as the rare Kivu ground thrush, Rwenzori turacco, Graur's warbler, white starred robin, reagal sunbird and many more!

In the afternoon, we proceed to Gisenyi on Lake Kivu.

Dinner and overnight at one of the select lodging facilities on offer.

Day 7

Nyungwe Forest National Park

Today will see you have an early start for your journey from Gisenyi for Nyungwe Forest National Park located in the south east corner of Rwanda. Along the way, will be opportunities for birding on the road. The journey through the forest will increase chances of glimpsing the rare and shy handsome francolin.

Lunch will be served en route while dinner and overnight stay at the lodging facilities available.

Day 8

Nyungwe Forest National Park

Today will see you get to go on an escorted walk in search of the large groups of colobus monkeys and birding. You may also indulge in another activity that relates to going onto the canopy bridge for observation and birding.

The bird list in Nyungwe includes:
the great blue turaco, the Ruwenzori turaco, the black-billed turaco, the Ross Turaco, the black and white casqued hornbill, the crowned hornbill, the crowned eagle, the forest buzzard, the handsome francolin, the oive pigeon, the cinnamon-breasted bee-eater, white-headed wood hoopoes, the blue-headed sunbird, Stuhlmann's sunbird, the black-beaded waxbill, the olive thrush, the slender-billed chestnut wing starling, the white-necked raven, the African saw-wing, the mountain wagtail, the cape wagtail, the red-throated alethe, the white-starred robin, and the equatorial akalata.

You may alternatively want to go chimp tracking.

Lunch will be served at the hotel after which you'll go birding along the lodge in the evening.

Day 9

Nyungwe Forest National Park – Butare/Huye

After breakfast you take advantage of an extra day of activities in the biggest mountain tropical forest in East Africa. You can go chimpanzee trekking, which starts very early in the morning.

In the afternoon, after lunch, we proceed to Butare. A stop over can be arranged in Gikongoro at Murambi genocide memorial. Butare is a pretty town where you have the possibility to find the best artisan shops in Rwanda and to visit the national cultural museum.

Dinner and overnight will be at Ibis Hotel.

Day 10

Departures

We drive to Kigali getting there in time for lunch.

In the afternoon, time permitting, you might take a city tour including a visit to the market, a pottery project, handicraft shops, the Fashion Museum and a genocide memorial.

Today is specifically reserved for transfer to the airport.
