The Children's farm

We at Destination Jungle believe that tourism should benefit communities and bring about positive changes. Tourism, conservation of nature and improving peoples livelihoods should all go hand in hand. We are partnering with The Voluntary Liberty Space For All Needs (VOLSFAN) with the aim of supporting the children and sensitizing our visitors on the importance of solidarity for sustainability.

Destination Jungle met the Coordinators of the Childrens’ Farm in May 2010, Mrs. Elisa Straffi, Mr. Obbo Othieno and Mr. Daniel Ssemagonjja.

By June 2010 after we visited the orphanage, Destination Jungle decided to start the partnership.

History:

The Children’s Farm was opened in June 2009 in a tranquil village in Bukomeru sub county, Bunyadde about 50 kilometers from Kampala. By mid 2010 it houses 9 orphans aged between four and twelve years. It is the duty of the Coordinators to select the children among the most disadvantaged and totally orphans. Children not only receive a proper “family” house and all care, but also can access school and health facilities.

The project is managed by VOLSFAN (Voluntary Liberty Space For All Needs), a community based organisation whose vision is to empower community members for their self sustainability through the creation of income generating activities, informal savings services and educational support to orphans through enhanced community integration and development.

For the year 2011 the Farm is planning to reach the number of 20 children, buy animals after completing the construction of the shelters, giving facilitations for the staff.

Our T-shirts

Since June 2010 we have developed two t-shirts, one on the subject of sustainable tourism and one on the protection of forests. The income from sales of the t-shirts goes directly to the Childrens’ Farm.

Sponsor a Child

The Childrens' Farm works on an adoption system, which means that the number of orphans who can be housed by the farm depends on the number of sponsorship. The adoption fee is 30 Euro per month which caters for meals, medical care, educational needs and clothing. The sponsorship is necessarily meant to sustain the whole center and not a specific child against other children.

Support a Project

The farm runs simple projects like animal keeping and subsistence farming (goats, chickens, cows, pigs, rubbits). Moreover in 2010 – 2011 the main house is still not completed and there is an urgent need to improve the water supply through construction of a borehole plus provision of water tank. Any donation would contribute highly to help complete the facilities.

Pay a Visit, spend time with the children

Destination Jungle and VOLSFAN are now conducting tailored visits where interested clients or visitors get to visit the farm and spend time in the village and with the children as a means of helping support the project and also deepening their travel experience. If you wish to donate cloths or any other contribution, you can do it directly.
